It’s been some time since I’ve decided to post
a political blog, for the simple fact that there are many more qualified people
here in the ether that are doing a much better job than I could ever hope to
do. However, there are a few things I need to get off my chest, thins that I
find a bit worrying. It seems as if the entire so-called progressive universe
has turned itself on its ear.
Let me start off by saying that I consider
myself a fairly educated individual, and I do my best to stay informed of “news’
of the day. I am aware that the Affordable Care Act roll out has been lest than
stellar, and to some extent, there really is no excuse for the shortcomings
this very important program has been experiencing, but please people, the sky
is not going to fall tomorrow. For example, Microsoft just rolled out it
Windows 8 update after several months of previews and beta testing, well, I
just spent two days updating a less than one year old laptop with all the
whistles, to Windows 8.1 and guess what, it sucked..!!...Two days to update one
laptop, however, what I did not do was to toss the baby out with the bathwater.
Shit happens.
The way
forward, it seems to me, is to do the work necessary to bring the Affordable
Care Act up to its’ potential and not do the work of the right wing for them. The right wing noise machines are comparing
the rollout to Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina, a laughable comparison if
I ever saw one. Lets remember that people died in the streets and in their
homes whilst Bush and Brown were whistling in dark.
When we, as progressives take on the same
argument as the noise machines, we are cutting off our noses to spite our
faces. Give the ACA time to fully reach the people it’s supposed to reach.
Republican governors like Scott and Jindal are doing everything in their power
to derail this, but no one seems to notice it.
Lets fix what needs to be fixed, but lets not
do the work of the reactionaries, which seems to be hell bent on taking this
country back to some nostalgic era that in reality never existed. The idea that
access to proper health is affordable to only the wealthiest
flies in the
face of logic; the healthier the populace, the more productive we all become.
It is beyond callous to think that a family
needs to make a choice of tending to a sick child or paying the rent, choosing
between medicine or food, between seeking care and being crushed by a hospital
bill.
A healthy population is in the best interests
of the country, just ask Sweden, Switzerland, or hell, just ask France.
and so it goes.
